Gig Buddies Hull & East Yorkshire

A befriending scheme supporting people with learning disabilities to go to gigs

Frequently asked questions for Gig Buddies Volunteers

What is the process to volunteer?

You will have an informal chat with our Gig Buddies Project Lead Emily who will talk you through what to expect. They’ll ask about your previous experiences, no experience is required, this is just to find out what support you may need so we can help you feel prepared.

Do I get any training?

Yes. There is training provided which covers what Gig Buddies is, learning disability awareness, safeguarding and GDPR.

How often should I volunteer?

We recommend once or twice a month. Gig Buddies run monthly socials where all Gig Buddy members can join together, this can be at a gig or a local event. This can be included as one of your meet-ups or you can do you own thing as a pair.

What about expenses?

We cover monthly expenses and the Gig Buddies Project Lead will explain this in more detail.

Do I need a DBS check?

All Gig Buddy volunteers will need a DBS. The Gig Buddies Project Leader will work through the DBS process with you.

Do I need to live in Hull or East Yorkshire?

This Hull and East Riding website covers just that but there are lot of local Gig Buddies sites across the UK. We can help you find your nearest one if it’s not us.

Frequently asked questions for Buddies

How do I get a gig buddy?

Finding a Gig Buddy can sometimes be really quick or sometimes take a little while. This depends on your preferences and who is already signed up. Our Gig Buddies Project Lead will be able to tell you a rough idea as it’s different for everyone.

Do I have to pay?

Gig Buddies is free to join. Like anyone, if you want to go to a gig you do have to pay the price of the ticket. You only need to pay for yourself not your buddy. There should be offers of a companion ticket. Our Gig Buddies Project Lead Emily will be able to help if you haven’t heard of that before.

What are socials?

At Gig Buddies we run a social once a month where Gig Buddy members are able to come together. These could be at a gig, event or down the local pub. It will be different every month. You can come along to these before you have a Gig Buddy match.

Do I need to live in Hull?

This Hull and East Riding site covers just that but there are lots of local Gig Buddies sites across the UK. We can help you find your nearest one if it’s not us.
